Honoring the Heroes of September 11—Including the Dogs Who Served

Today, Daisy’s Legacy joins people across the country in remembering the lives lost on September 11, 2001. We honor the survivors, families, first responders, recovery workers, military personnel, volunteers, and everyone whose life was forever changed.

We also remember the remarkable dogs who served beside people during one of our nation’s darkest moments.

The Search-and-Rescue Dogs of 9/11

More than 350 trained search-and-rescue dogs were called into action following the attacks. Working beside their handlers in dangerous and exhausting conditions, they searched through debris at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and other recovery sites.

These dogs used their extraordinary senses to search for survivors and help recovery teams locate victims. When there was no one left to rescue, many continued working while surrounded by noise, smoke, unstable rubble, and overwhelming loss.

Their contribution went beyond the search. The dogs also became a source of comfort for first responders and recovery workers. A quiet moment beside a dog offered reassurance, warmth, and emotional relief during days filled with unimaginable hardship.

Roselle: A Story of Courage and Trust

We also honor the guide dogs who helped their handlers reach safety.

Roselle, a Labrador Retriever guide dog, was resting beneath Michael Hingson’s desk on the 78th floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower when the building was struck.

Remaining calm despite the confusion around them, Roselle worked with Michael as they descended 78 flights of stairs. Together, they escaped the tower before it collapsed. Their story remains a powerful example of courage, partnership, and the extraordinary trust between working dogs and the people who depend on them.

Honoring All Working and Service Dogs

On this day of remembrance, we recognize every animal who has served humanity—search-and-rescue dogs, guide dogs, therapy dogs, military working dogs, police K-9s, medical-alert dogs, mobility-assistance dogs, and the many companion animals who comfort people through grief and trauma.

Their loyalty reminds us that the bond between people and animals can provide strength, safety, and hope when they are needed most
